Chun Yuan, Ph.D.

Chun Yuan, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Departments of Radiology, Electrical Engineering, and Bioengineering of the University of Washington.  Dr. Yuan received his undergraduate education at Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China, where he earned his B.S. in physics in 1982.  He received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Physics from the University of Utah in 1988. His expertise is in magnetic resonance imaging physics and software design, especially in the area of flow imaging and angiography.

Dr. Yuan has been the co-director of the Vascular Imaging Lab at the University of Washington since 1997. He has pioneered multiple high-resolution MRI techniques for imaging vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques and led numerous studies examining carotid atherosclerosis with MRI.  Research results have shown the ability and viability of MRI to visualize carotid atherosclerotic plaque and distinguish various plaque components, including plaque size, fibrous cap, measurement precision, lipid core and hemorrhage.
