Active learning strategies come in all shapes and sizes. Interactive lectures, case-based learning, and simulations are all examples of active learning. When used in a traditional classroom setting or outside of class, these strategies help learners make connections - wiht the concepts or procedures they're trying to master, with the instructors, or with their peers. Poorly implemented technology can distract teachers and trainees from learning content.
This session will focus on the appropriate use of interactive technology targeting active learning. We will demonstrate and discuss: (1) audience response systems (a.k.a. "clickers") for interactive lectures, (2) examples of web-based teaching cases, and (3) use of web-based tools for student interaction outside of class.
Participants will learn to:
- Identify various types of interactive technologies and how they can be used to promote active learning;
- Engage student attention in class with an audience response system
- Use or create interactive web cases
- Make use of online tools to allow students to collaborate outside of class
