RESEARCH

The University of Washington ranks first among public medical schools and second among all medical schools in federal funding, with a total of more than $1 billion, and the university counts among its ranks five Nobel Prize winners. UW ranks in the top 10 in NIH funding for radiology.

Research is an important part of our educational mission and is now an integral component of our program. All residents undertake a mentored research project during their two-month “Competencies” rotation. At least half of our residents schedule up to six months of additional elective time for research during their residency.

Our new Research Track, which requires a separate match, offers residents a year of dedicated mentorship, research training, and experience during PGY-5. The research experience will extend into the fellowship year.

Beginning this year, residents will present their work at the Resident Research Day. Residents are encouraged to submit papers to national meetings, and the department will fund presenters’ attendance at these meetings.
