Goals and Objectives - UWMC and HMC Ultrasound
Educational Goals and Objectives of the University of Washington
Diagnostic Radiology Residency Training
In Ultrasound
Rotation Goals:
1) To develop the necessary “hands on” and intellectual skills required to perform and correctly interpret a diagnostic ultrasound examination.
2) To become competent with the unique benefit offered by ultrasound in the field of real time guidance for interventional procedures.
Residents are expected to keep a logbook of full cases and to learn how to scan with the sonographer. By the end of their training residents should be competent in the following studies: abdomens, renal, pelvis and TV, thyroid, scrotum, liver and biometry and should be ale to scan the patient accurately by themselves.
Initial Rotation (Years I, II):
KNOWLEDGE BASED OBJECTIVES:
1. The resident will be introduced to the basics of Ultrasound technology and should be able to perform technically adequate examinations and appropriate diagnosis for all routine sonographic examinations. B
2. Basic proficiency in gray-scale imaging, pulsed Doppler spectral-analysis, color Doppler imaging, and power Doppler imaging should be attained.
3. Skills necessary to properly diagnose common emergency conditions, such as acute cholecystitis, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and ectopic pregnancy, among others, will be emphasized in preparation for call responsibilities.
TECHNICAL SKILLS OBJECTIVES:
1. Residents should be able to perform a basic obstetric sonogram including biometry.

Advanced Rotation (Years III, IV) Harborview Medical Center and UWMC
KNOWLEDGE BASED OBJECTIVES:
1. The resident will build on skills developed in the first 2 years.
2. Findings in differential diagnosis for more advanced fetal anomalies will be emphasized.
3. The resident should be competent in performing and interpreting obstetrical ultrasound and sonographic studies involving the GI tract, kidney, bladder, appendix, gynecologic organs, scrotum, transplant organs, and other more complex procedures.
TECHNICAL SKILLS OBJECTIVES:
1. Additional skills relating to biopsy procedures and aspirations should be obtained.
