Diagnostic Radiology Residency Training
GI/GU Radiology and Fluoroscopy
During the first rotation, MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE BASED AND TECHNICAL SKILL OBJECTIVES shall include the acquisition of:
- Proficiency and safe operation of the fluoroscope.
- Knowledge of radiation protection.
- Understanding of patient preparation for GI/GU examinations as detailed in the University of Washington Hospitals Manual of GI & GU Radiology Procedures.
- Knowledge of use of iodinated and barium contrast media for GI/GU examinations.
- Proficiency in performance of high-quality traditional GI/GU fluoroscopic procedures as detailed in the UW Procedure Manual.
- Essential skills in interpretation of abdominal radiographs and traditional GI/GU contrast examinations.
- Essential skills of communication appropriate to effective radiologic reporting.
- Consultative skills appropriate to the resident’s level of training.
- Knowledge appropriate for the level of resident training by reading and film study as directed in the University of Washington Procedure Manual.
- Essential skills of case presentation.
- Knowledge to allow passage of the R-II examination in abdominal radiology, gastrointestinal radiology and genitourinary radiology.
During the second and third rotation the MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE BASED AND TECHNICAL SKILL OBJECTIVES shall include the acquisition of:
- Additional skills in the safe and efficient use of fluoroscopic equipment by different vendors.
- Proficiency in performing additional GI/GU fluoroscopic procedures as detailed in the University of Washington Procedure Manual. This shall include the ability to tailor examinations to individual patient problems.
- Additional skills in interpretation of abdominal radiology and GI/GU contrast examinations.
- Advanced reporting and consultative skills.
- Advanced knowledge of GI/GU interpretation and differential diagnosis.
- Skills needed to effectively manage and coordinate the section and daily schedule with attending staff serving as consultants.
