UW SOM GME Radiology Leave Policies

Vacation Policy

Residents shall receive twenty-one (21) days of vacation each year, six (6) weekend days plus fifteen (15) week days for a total of twenty-one days.

There is a cap of 10 leave days (inclusive of sick, vacation,
conference, administrative, etc.) from Nuclear Medicine rotations for the entire residency.

Weekend days must be used for Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays.  They can not be converted to week days.

When a resident is on vacation the day preceding and the day following a weekend, the Saturday and Sunday will be counted as vacation days (unless on call).

Example:

  • Friday, September 4, 2009: counts as 1 weekday
  • Tuesday, September 8, 2009: counts as 1 weekday
  • September 4-September 8, 2009: counts as 2 weekdays and 3 weekend days because weekend is bracketed
  • Tuesday, September 8 - Thursday, September 10, 2009: counts as 3 weekdays because it is less than a full week
  • Monday, September 7 – Friday, September 11, 2009 off: counts as 4 weekdays and 3 weekend days because a full week is taken (the holiday counts as a weekend day).

When a resident is scheduled for vacation Monday through Friday, the Saturday and Sunday following will be reported as weekend vacation days for a block of seven (7) days.**

When a resident is on vacation the day preceding and the day following a holiday, the holiday will be counted as a weekend vacation day.   If a resident on VAS rotation is on vacation the Tuesday following a Monday holiday, the Sunday and holiday are counted as weekend vacation days as well (because their workweek begins on Sunday).

Example:

  • Monday, December 21 – Friday, December 25: count as 4 weekdays and 3 weekend days
  • Thursday, December 24 – Monday, December 28: count as 3 weekdays and 3 weekend days

When a resident is on vacation the Tuesday through Friday following a Monday holiday, the Monday as well as the Saturday and Sunday following will be reported as weekend vacation days for a block of seven (7) days.  If rotating at the VA, the seven-day block will consist of Sunday through Saturday.

When a resident is on vacation the Monday through Friday in which Thanksgiving occurs, a block of seven (7) days will be counted.  Use of weekday versus weekend vacation days will depend on rotation assignment.*

Vacation unused at the end of the term of agreement does not carry forward to the following year.

*SCH and VAS do not observe the day after Thanksgiving as a holiday.  If a resident on either of these rotations takes that day off, it will count as a weekday vacation day.

*SCH does not observe Veterans Day as a holiday.  If a resident on this rotation takes that day off, it will count as a weekday vacation day.

**If rotating at the VA, the seven-day block will consist of Sunday through Saturday because their workweek begins on Sunday.

Sick Leave Policy

Residents shall receive seventeen (17) days of sick leave each year, five (5) weekend days plus twelve (12) week days for a total of seventeen days.

Weekend days must be used for Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays.  They can not be converted to week days.

When a resident is on extended sick leave, week-ends will be recorded as sick days, e.g., if a resident is sick on Thursday, Friday, and the following Monday, then Saturday and Sunday must be reported as weekend sick days as well.

When a resident is sick the day preceding and the day following a holiday the holiday will be counted as a weekend sick day.
