Case 32 Answer 2
No. Developing densities which have the appearance of breast tissue are problematic when core needle biopsies are performed for their evaluation. Without excising the lesion, it is impossible to know whether one has sampled it well or whether one found benign breast tissue adjacent to the true lesion. Thus, regardless of a needle biopsy result, surgical excision is recommended for this type of finding.
At excisional biopsy this finding was proven to be Pseudoangiomatous Stromal Hyperplasia or PASH. PASH is a benign entity seen more commonly in premenopausal women. It usually presents as a well-defined mass and may be palpable. PASH may be multifocal, and is thought to be caused by hormonal changes.
