Case 14 Answer
An ultrasound is recommended to distinguish between a simple cyst and solid mass. If a simple cyst is found, it is benign, and a diagnostic mammogram is not necessary. If you are sure a mass is present, and a cyst is a possibility, then starting with an ultrasound may avoid unnecessary studies.
If you had access to old films, they would be very helpful to avoid a work-up, however, this was labeled as a baseline mammogram, so there are no old films. A diagnostic work-up would be necessary to decide whether a biopsy is necessary, so this answer is a little premature.
An ultrasound was performed

You identify this solid-appearing mass in the lower inner breast, but are not sure whether this corresponds to the mammographic finding. What can you do to confirm this?
- Aspirate the mass, and if it yields fluid, repeat mammogram to confirm it has been removed
- Place BB on the skin over the mass and repeat mammogram
- Perform MRI examination
- Perform core biopsy
