Cardiac MR Fellowship Information

The University of Washington’s Department of Radiology Body Imaging Cardiac MR Fellowship began on July 1, 2005. The Cardiac MR fellow is primarily based at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, where state-of-the-art clinical 1.5 and 3.0 T systems are in place. A small percentage of time may also be spent at other University of Washington affiliate hospitals in the Seattle metro area, including Harborview Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Training

The Body Imaging Cardiac MR Imaging Fellowship offers training in abdominal and pelvic MRI, MR angiography, cardiac MR, and MR post-processing techniques. In addition, elective time can be used to pursue other interests such as musculoskeletal MR, neuro MR, body CT, cardiovascular CT, and Ultrasound. The fellowship is designed for the individual interested in developing an in-depth knowledge of cardiac MR interpretation and scanning techniques, as well as performing original MR research. To facilitate this, the first six months of the fellowship will be dedicated to learning how to efficiently and effectively run a cardiac MR service, with the second six months devoted primarily to performing research and electives. It is expected that the fellow will successfully complete a mentored original research project culminating in one or more publications/presentations. For this, the Diagnostic Imaging Sciences Center (1.5 and 3.0 T research magnets), a dedicated UW coil laboratory, research alliance resources from Philips Medical, as well as the full resources of a large academic department with three PhD faculty will be available.

Expectations

Responsibilities include sharing in the body imaging call pool and the ability to work in a busy clinical/academic practice. Weekly interesting case conferences, as well as read-outs with cardiology and interventional radiology are organized by the MR fellow, with weekly MR physics/principles conferences jointly organized by the fellow and attending MR faculty. A variety of other teaching and clinical conferences take place on a weekly basis, and fellows participate, present cases and review pertinent imaging findings.

The successful candidate for the fellowship will have completed residency training in Diagnostic Radiology and be board certified in their country of citizenship. Completion of USMLE Step I, II and III is required. A track record of previous research is important, as is the desire to continue in academic radiology. Foreign medical graduates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate.
